ROOTED AND GROUNDED

And I pray that Christ will be more and more at home in your hearts, living within you as you trust in Him. May your roots go down deep into the soil of God’s marvelous Love; and may you be able to feel and understand, as all God’s children should, how long, how wide, how deep, and how high His Love really is; and to experience this Love for yourselves, though it is so great that you will never see the end of it or fully know or understand it. And so at last you will be filled up with God himself. (Ephesians 3: 17-19, TLB)

A year ago this month, a tornado tore through my neighborhood, cutting a destrutive swath that demolished homes and even took a life.  One tree in a neighbor’s yard mesmerized me. That tree was twisted and bent from the fierce, swirling winds.  But it did not break!  Why?  Because its roots were deeply and firmly planted.  I’m sorry they took that tree down as they cleaned up the yard of the leveled home.  What a symbol it was!

We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.  (II Corinthians 4:  8-9)

Adversity can and will hit and hit hard, but when your roots are way down deep, you’ll not only survive it, you can actually come out stronger on the other side.

The Ephesians passage about being rooted in God’s Love floated insistently into my mind yesterday as I pondered almost 3 1/2 decades in business.  I memorized it years ago in The Living Bible version and actually decoupaged it for my wall.  (Age alert about the decoupage! Smile…) Paul’s prayer for the Ephesian Christians sums up what I have experienced in the Lord as a business owner and a follower of Christ. Breath it in deeply for yourself and for those you love.

I want to be like that twisted but not uprooted tree that survived the storm. I want nothing more than to be so rooted and grounded in His Love that nothing can shake me, no weakness can successfully tempt me, and no lie of the enemy can rob me of the vivid awareness of God’s Love. I’m simply stuck on the desire for the consistent experience of being “rooted and grounded and the deep longing to equip others to do the same.

(Note:  Felicia Johnson and I are teaching a one-year Bible study in our church in 2018 called  Rooted and Grounded.  Call Grace Temple Church in Hattiesburg if you’re in the Hattiesburg area  and interested in being a class participant.)

Life’s storms will come.  Ego will rise up to bite you.  Old voices will taunt you. People will disappoint you. But God will never fail you.  He’s given you His Word to mature you, His Spirit to empower you, and His Name to protect you.  Most of all, He’s wrapped you up in His strong arms of Love@

Paul’s prayer is definitely my prayer today – for me and for you!
