I will praise Thee because I am fearfully and wonderfully made. (Psalm 139:14)
Oscar Wilde said, “You might as well be yourself. Everyone else is already taken.”
One of the deadliest poisons to healthy self-worth and to the accurate valuing of God’s creation (YOU!) is the constant comparison of yourself to others. Despite what your mind and emotions might tell you, the problem is not how you fail to measure up to the person-of-the-hour in your self-measurement method. The major problem is that comparison system of evaluating yourself.
There are 3 major problems with the comparison habit.
- There will always be someone who has better looks, talents, or achievements. You can have so much athletic talent that you make it to the Olympics, and you still can make yourself miserable with comparisons. Miss USA could have insecurities in the Miss World contest. If you walk into a roomful of people looking around to see who’s skinnier, who’s prettier or more handsome, or who’s dressed better than you, you sabotage your ability to connect with people. That’s a self-focus that robs you of energy and charisma. But you are just right and just fitted to all the assignments God has for you. More about that in a moment.
- God gave differing gifts to individuals. He did that for a reason. What if everyone thought the same, acted the same, had the same abilities? Some very important things would never get done, and life would be very boring. Look, you can’t legitimately compare yourself to others. It’s not the way God set it up. This is beyond apples and oranges. It’s apples and turnips. Thank God He made us different!
- You are divinely-equipped to do exactly what you are designed and purposed to do. Accept that God made you with the looks, abilities, and personality that He meant for you to have. Long before you were humanly conceived, God conceived you in His Mind. Then, no matter what the circumstances of your birth, God miraculously caused the exact DNA combinations to connect and form YOU. He knew in advance all that you would face, every calling He would give you, every opportunity that you would have. He gave you the raw material to develop and mature. He has or is in the process of miraculously implementing Romans 8:28, causing every crazy thing that has happened in your life to work together for your good and His plans. Even when your choices lead you down the wrong path, God is still on the job on your behalf – helping you learn, magnetically drawing you back, and showing you His relentless Love. He has assigned you infinite worth – so much value that He was willing to experience death so that you might live with Him forever.
Does all of this sound like you need to be worried about your worth? Comparing yourself with other people is irrelevant. Valuing yourself and your uniqueness as God does – that’s what really counts.
For who do you know that really knows you, knows your heart? And even if they did, is there anything that they would discover in you that you could take credit for? Aren’t everything you have and everything you are sheer gifts from God? So what’s the point of all this comparing and competing? You already have all you need. (I Corinthians 4: 7-8, The Message Bible)
Lord, forgive me when I feel “less than” in the presence of someone else’s “more than.” YOU, O God, are my more than more than more than enough, and You have given me Yourself. That’s crazy! Grow me up in You, Lord!
