“Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.” (Matthew 7: 24-27)
I’m going to be building a house as soon as I sell this one, and I am well aware of the importance of the foundation of the home. If you don’t get that part right, you can include the finest decor or the fanciest roof, but that house will have big problems.
Part of the stability of the foundation is the ground on which it is built. Every effort is made to firm up that dirt to minimize shifting and settling later. Would you even think about going out on a deeply sandy beach, where the waves crash in, and choosing that spot to build your dream home?
Jesus compared the doers with their counterparts who also heard His words, but they did not follow up. They didn’t take action. It’s that doing part that makes the difference in a secure life and one that can easily be “washed away” when the inevitable troubles come..
It’s a little disconcerting to me that Jesus wasn’t referring to “evil people” in his teaching. Notice that both had gathered around to hear the Word. You can have cabinets of binders filled with your copious notes from sermons, seminars, or books you’ve studied. That’s a good step, but being a skillful listener and note-taker does not change your life. All of us know plenty that we don’t DO! If you really hear, if it registers as meaningful, your actions and habits will begin to change. And sometimes that doesn’t happen “magically.” It requires intentional action.
So which of Jesus’ Words have you heard, mentally affirmed, and failed to implement? Beginning to move on those insights could change your life!
Lord, You know I study constantly. I am hungry for Your Word. Holy Spirit, light a fire under me for ACTION on all that I learn!
